The festival originated from a legend that a demon fell in love with a woman and hid on the woman's vagina wherein this sharp-tooth demon was jealous of the woman's two husbands which the demon bite the penises of these two husbands.Knowing this,the woman sought help to a blacksmith who made an iron phallus or an iron penis that will break the teeth of the demon and the plan was successful and from then on steel phallus or iron phallus is worship or venerated in Japan.People seek help,protection and prosperity from it.
There are two erected giant penis statue that will paraded on the festival or in the day of the festival this year 2019 - that is the black penis and the pink penis.The pink penis was donated by a drag bar or by a drag queen club in Tokyo which is called Elizabeth.
"The venerated items are taken out on mikoshi floats on the shoulders of worshippers....." ( Sora News 24)
The festival is held on the Kanayama Shrine.
