World's Largest Turtle So Far

South America - Why prehistoric or ancient creatures were gigantic size compare today's world like the dinosaurs which are giant reptiles?



Recently, as I found in the internet, remains of a giant turtle creature has been unearth in Venezuela and Colombia and its shell or carapace which was found is gigantic in size. The carapace or shell is said to be 2.4 meters to 3 meters as the reports said or to 8 foot to 10 foot. The gigantic turtle is called Stupendemys Geographicus.

The male Stupendemys Geographicus has horns on his shell which is said to be  rare feature in turtles.But the female one has no horns.

The turtle is aid to be so far the largest turtle ever discovered and discovered existed.The turtle is said to be 8-million years old or its shell or carapace.

"S. geographicus weighed an estimated 2,500 lbs (1,145 kilograms) almost 100 times the size of its closest living relative,the Amazon river turtle (Peltocephalus dumerilianus) and twice the size of the alrgest living turtle,the marine leatherback ( Dermochelys coriacea),the researhers wrote in the study."
