A post on the microblogging site Weibo by an account that is linked to
official Chinese law enforcement agency which is the Communist Party’s Central
Political and Legal Affairs Commission has sparked controversy because the post
seems to mock India on its COVID-19 ongoing crisis.
The post is a collage or picture showing China lighting a rocket into
space and India lighting a fire for cremating bodies of people who die of
COVID-19 side to side. The picture has a text that says: “Lighting
a fire in China VS lighting a fire in India." Or in other
news, the caption has: “China lighting a fire versus India lighting a
fire." The post appears Saturday afternoon but it is
already deleted. The post on Weibo appear after a day the Chinese President Xi
Jingping sent condolences and help to India Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“A social media post from an account linked with the Chinese Communist
Party has purportedly ridiculed India’s coronavirus crisis. The post on Chinese
site Weibo juxtaposed two photographs – one showing a rocket launch in China
and another showing Covid-19 victims being cremated in India.” (Scroll)
“Photos of the Tianhe module launch
and its fuel burn-off were compared with what appeared to be a mass outdoor
cremation in India, and captioned “China lighting a fire versus India lighting
a fire.” The post on Saturday by the Communist Party's Central Political and
Legal Affairs Commission on its official Sina Weibo account was accompanied by
a hashtag noting that new COVID-19 cases in India had surpassed 400,000 a day. Later that day, it could no
longer be found. Many Chinese social media users expressed shock and anger at
the insensitivity of the post. (Gadgets360)
Netizens or social media users consider the post insensitive.
