Recently, Facebook announced that it changes its name into “Meta” as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg say it on Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference last October 28,2021 Thursday to encompass the company beyond ambitions of mere social media in the internet and to reflect who really the company is.
The change of name according
to Mark Zuckerberg is only the parent company name; Facebook will no longer the
parent company name but now “Meta” but Facebook will still be there like
Instagram and WhatsApp but no more the company’s parent name. The vision of the
company will still be the same.
The company also said that it
will also change its stock ticker from then FB and now MVRS, effective December
01.
The name is formerly,
“Facebook, Inc.” and now “Meta Platforrms, Inc.” or as “Meta”. The renaming or
rebranding is due to its plans about a “metaverse” world or an augmented and
virtual reality that that the user not only watch something in the internet but
one can enter into it as one is in real world chatting with friends for example
as if you are physically with each other .According to some report, that is why
Facebook is changing its name because of a whistleblower name Frances Haugen a
former employee, who accused of Facebook of prioritizing profits rather than users
‘welfare which released company’s internal documents to lawmakers, regulators, and
news outlets. But Mark Zuckerberg refuted vehemently the claim.
According
to Mark Zuckerberg: “Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our
DNA we are a company that builds technology to connect people, and the
metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got
started,”…. “We believe the metaverse will be the successor to the mobile
internet,”… "I've been thinking a lot
about our identity as we begin this next chapter. Facebook is one of the most
used products in the history of the world,"…. "It is an iconic social
media brand, but increasingly it just doesn't encompass everything that we do.”…
"Over time, I hope that we are seen as a
metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we're
building towards,"…. "We're now looking at and reporting on our business as two
different segments, one for our family of apps, and one for our work on future
platforms." And as part of this, it is time for us to adopt a new company
brand to encompass everything that we do, to reflect who we are and what we
hope to build." "Our mission remains the same
still about bringing people together, our apps and their brands, they're not
changing either," We're still the company that designs technology around
people, now we have a new North Star to help bring the metaverse to life, and
we have a new name that reflects the full breadth of what we do and the future
that we want to help build." “From now on, we’re going to be metaverse-first,
not Facebook-first.”
“To an outsider, a metaverse may look like a version of VR, but some people believe it could be the future of the internet. Instead of being on a computer, people in a metaverse might use a headset to enter a virtual world connecting all sorts of digital environments. It is hoped the virtual world could be used for practically anything from work, play and concerts, to socialising with friends and family.” (BBC)
