80’s Asia’s Fastest Woman Die

 

During the 1980’s a Filipina have gain the title of “Asia’s Sprint Queen” for being the fastest woman ever live in the world of sports in Asia winning medals for her fast feet. She is Maria Lydia De Vega Mercado or known as Lydia De Vega.


Lydia De Vega is a Filipina Athlete that live at Meycauayan Bulacan Philippines which she began her sports career at the young age where she was discovered in the 1970’s at the Palarong Pambansa then and became a part of Far Eastern University Tamaraws varsity team. She retired from her track and field sports career in 1994.After her retirement she was elected a councilor at Meycauayan Bulacan in 2001.In 2005 she become a liaison officer of the Alliance of Coaches and Athletes of the Philippines with the Philippine Sports Commission. In 2005 also, she went to Singapore for a job that will coach athletes in Singapore. In 2018 she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and in July 2022 she was in critical condition until she succumb to death last August 10,2022 of the disease while on the hospital at Makati Medical Center. She died at the age of 57.


Her death was announced by her daughter Stephanie Mercado De Koenigswarter on the evening of August 10,2022 on a Facebook post saying :  “On behalf of our family, it is with absolute grief that I announce the death of my mother, Lydia De Vega, this evening, August 10, 2022, at the Makati Medical Center,”….. “She fought the very good fight and is now at peace.”
