Study says
men are most likely vulnerable to COVID-19 infection than women or according to
study men have higher numbers of being COVID-19 patients than women. The bias
is said to blame on male sex hormone or male testosterone.
If the male
has lower testosterone levels, he is an easy target to COVID-19 infection and
the treatment is worse than women. But the study also says, COVID-19 cause the
decrease in levels of testosterone and when it decreases that is the worse it
gets and leads to death among men. Thus, there are great number of male cases
than female who die of COVID-19.
“Anew study
has linked more men dying of Covid-19 globally than women to the ability of
SARS-CoV-2 in depleting testosterone levels in the body. Initially the lower
testosterone levels in the Covid-19 patients were associated with poor health
condition, however a new study shows that it may be viral infection that is causing
the level of male sex hormone to decrease,….” (News18)
“Data from around the world have since confirmed
that men face a greater risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19 than
women and that children are largely spared. Now, scientists investigating how
the virus does its deadly work have zeroed in on a possible reason:
Androgens—male hormones such as testosterone—appear to boost the virus’ ability
to get inside cells.” (Science Mag)
“Epidemiological data from around the world have
confirmed the early reports of male vulnerability. In Lombardy in Italy, for
example, men comprised 82% of 1591 patients admitted to intensive
care units (ICUs) from 20 February to 18 March, according to a JAMA paper.
And male mortality exceeded that of women in every adult age group in
another JAMA study of 5700 New York City patients hospitalized
with COVID-19. Now, researchers are on the trail of a mechanism for this
male bias—an effort led by prostate cancer researchers, who have a deep
acquaintance with androgens.” (Science Mag)
Testosterone according to the study is linked to
respiratory illness and low levels of it can cause respiratory infection .COVID-19
is a respiratory illness thus men is more vulnerable.
““Testosterone is associated with the immune system
of respiratory organs, and low levels of testosterone might increase the risk
of respiratory infections,” says Selahittin Çayan, professor of urology, who
contributed to the study.” (News Yahoo)
“"Testosterone is associated with the immune
system of respiratory organs, and low levels of testosterone might increase the
risk of respiratory infections. Low testosterone is also associated with
infection-related hospitalisation and all-cause mortality in male in ICU
patients, so testosterone treatment may also have benefits beyond improving
outcomes for COVID-19," Professor Çayan explains.” (Science Daily)
If the levels are high why it causes the sickness if lower levels cause
the sickness and how COVID-19 can deplete the levels anyway if it is high? Perhaps,
the levels are already low and from that low levels the COVID-19 enters or
could enter and wreak havoc
The main point : According to study men leads of COVID-19 patients than
women and that point to their sex hormone of testosterone levels.
