Meteorite,
what are they? According to science, meteorite are small fragment or fragments
from a large thing like asteroid or comet that hits the planet Earth and crush
on the Earth’s surface. Most meteorites are rocks or iron and nickel or metals.
But do you know what is the largest meteorite in the world?
The
largest meteorite ever discovered and known in the world is – HOBA. Yes, the
name is “Hoba”; it is the world largest known meteorite on planet Earth that
remains on the place and location where it crushes and landed a very long time
ago since it enters the Earth. It is remain intact on its place. The name came
from where it crush that is from the farm name “Hoba West”.
It
was discovered by a farmer during 1920 while flowing his field near
Grootfontein, Namibia. The scientists were not able to pull out the meteorite
from its place because of its great weight thus it remains until now on the
place where it crushes and land. But scientists have some pieces from it to
study it. It is believed it crush and landed on Earth 80,000 years ago.
HOBA
weighs 66 ton and it is an iron meteorite with nine feet long nine feet wide
and three feet thick. It is tabular in shape. It composed of iron 84 %,nickel 16 %,and trace or small amounts
of cobalt and other metals.
HOBA
has no crater impact which scientists concludes that it travels at low speed
and velocity and when it hits the Earth’s surface it has no crater-like impact.
The
spot or site or location where HOBA is now a tourist spot where the Namibian
government made it so.
