Electricity From The Thin Air

Electricity is what powers your electricity-dependent things like our appliances at home and our light bulbs; as well  as our wireless things like our cellphones.

This electricity in our homes we paid for through money as an exchange so that we have electricity at home. This electricity is plugged in or install in our homes through electric cables from the electric post outside our homes. This electricity travels from transmission lines  through wires or cables and from electric posts outside our homes from electricity generator sources.

Electricity sources like coal, nuclear energy, natural gas, and renewable resources (like biomass energy, hydro power, wind energy, geothermal energy, and solar energy).

But recently, electrical engineer or scientists have discovered a new source of electricity or a new electricity generation source. That is they created or invented a device that could generate electricity from the thin air or from the air in the atmosphere. They call this device as "Air-Gen" or air-powered generator. It generates electricity from the air in the atmosphere through a microbe called Geobacter Sulfurreducens. The device taps on the microbe which then produces electric current or electricity. It is a continuous electricity generation that can light a LED (light-emitting-diode) bulb or lighting and cellphones as the news said.

It is a device that taps electric current or electricity by a moisture or humidity in the air or in the atmosphere by a microbe Geobacter Sulfurreducens; as long as there is moisture or humid in the air as the news aid.

The device is made of thin film protein nanowires and electrodes.

"... a device they call an "Air-gen" or air-powered generator, with electrically conductive protein nanowires produced by the mircobe Geobacter. The Air-gen connects electrodes to the protein nanowires in such a way that electrical current is generate from the water vapor naturally present in the atmosphere." (Science Dauly)

" " I saw that when the nanowires were contacted with electrodes in a specific way the device generated a current.I found that the exposure to atmospheric humidity was essential and that protein nanowires absorbed water producing a voltage gradient across the device."" (Xiameng LIu,Ph,D student in Jun Lao's lab/Science Daily)

" The film works by simply absorbing humidity from the surrounding air.Though researchers aren't sure exactly how these wires work, the tiny power plants pack a punch...." Science Mag)

"They then exposed the device to a different levels of humidity. It worked best in air of about 45% humidity but also in conditions as dry as the Sahara Desert or as humid as New Orleans, the team reports.... " (Science Mag)

".....thin-film devices made from nanomtere-scale protein wires harvested from the microbe Geobater Sulfurreducens can generate continuous electric power in the ambient environment. The device produce a sustained voltage of around 0.5 volts across a 7-micrometre thick film, with a current density of around 17 micoramoere per square centimetre. We find the driving force behind this energy generation to be a self-maintained moisture gradient that forms within the film when the film is exposed to the humidity that is naturally present in air. Connecting several devices linearly scales up the voltage and current to power electronics. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of a continuous energy-harvesting strategy that is less restricted by location or environmental conditions than other sustainable approaches. " (Nature)

"And because the "air-gen",as Yao calls the electrode-and-nanowire device, requires no external power,it can be used in many more places than solar panels or wind turbines." (Science Mag)

" " We are literally making electricity out of thin air ."" (Electrical engineer Jun Yao?Science Daily)
