Pope Francis
would become the first pope in the history of the Catholic Church to approve
same-sex union, as the news said though previously according to the news before
becoming a pope, he is a staunch or loyal opponent to gay marriage but however,
advocating civil union as alternative.
“Pope
Francis has said that he thinks same-sex couples should be allowed to have
"civil unions" .He made the comments, which observers say are his
clearest remarks yet on gay relationships, in a documentary directed by Evgeny Afineevsky.” (BBC)
“Pope Francis became the first pontiff to endorse same-sex civil unions
in comments for a documentary that premiered Wednesday, sparking cheers from
gay Catholics and demands for clarification from conservatives, given the
Vatican’s official teaching on the issue.” (Associated Press)
In a documentary film directed
by Evgeny Afineevsky -who
is gay (as the news said)-the pope show his support.
“The papal thumbs-up came
midway through the feature-length documentary “Francesco,” which premiered at
the Rome Film Festival. The film, which features fresh interviews with the
pope, delves into issues Francis cares about most, including the environment,
poverty, migration, racial and income inequality, and the people most affected
by discrimination.” (Associated Press)
According to Pope Francis: “Homosexual people have the right to be in a
family. They are children of God,”; “You can’t kick someone out of a family,
nor make their life miserable for this. What we have to have is a civil union
law; that way they are legally covered.”
But conservatives say the pope has made a serious mistake and
contradicts the long standing of the church against gay or same sex
relationship.
“However, conservative Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island,
called for clarification. “The pope’s statement clearly contradicts what has
been the long-standing teaching of the church about same-sex unions,” he said
in a statement. “The church cannot support the acceptance of objectively
immoral relationships.” And Ed Mechmann, director of public policy at the
Archdiocese of New York, said in a blog post that the pope had simply “made a
serious mistake.”” (Associated Press)
The main point: Pope Francis become the first pope to endorse or support
same sex civil union.
