Does physical brain size and
intelligence directly proportional? – when your brain size is big so also your
intelligence?
Recently on the news, a brain
scientist name Jeff Morgan Stibel, according to his study said that physical human
brain size has greatly decreased for the past 50,000 years as well as
encephalization for anatomically modern humans published on the Brain, Behavior
and Evolution thus also cognition [?]
In previous studies, it said
that the growth of cognition is also directly proportional to the growth of brain
size and encephalization growth. In short as the brain size and encephalization
grows so also cognition.
“Growth in human brain size and
encephalization is well documented throughout much of prehistory and believed
to be responsible for increasing cognitive faculties.” (Karger/Decreases In
Brain Size And Encephalization In Anatomically Modern Humans)
According to various scholars
on any discipline, the decline or the decreased in size of the physical brain
have affected changes on behavior and cognition but it is not clear why human
physical brain decline or decreased on size.
“This has led scholars across
various disciplines to propose that brain size declines have resulted in
changes to human behavior and cognitive ability, a theory that is now prominent
in popular literature.” (Karger)
“. It is not clear, however, why human brain size has been declining
since at least through the Late Pleistocene. Nor do we know the impact, if any, to human cognition.”(Karger)
The shrinking in size or the decline of human physical brain size, according
to the news, could be result of an environmental factor such as technology, education,
and health. While encephalization is due to obesity.
“In
fact, environmental factors such as health, education, and technology might
have made up for the fact that our brains were shrinking — or that brain volume
isn’t strongly correlated with intelligence.” (Futurism)
