Minerals are nutrients that we need in our body to make us healthy, but
according to health experts, the minerals we need in our body can be measured
on how much. That is “macro” or on large amount and “micro” on small amount.
Here are the minerals we need
either “macro” or “micro”:
A. Macro-Minerals – minerals we need in large amount.
1.
SODIUM – helps in maintaining normal fluid inside and
outside the cells and also helps in absorption of nutrients in the intestine.
2.
CHLORIDE – helps in regulating the volume of fluid in the
body and maintains the acid-base balance in the blood.
3.
POTASSIUM -for healthy heart function and proper functioning
of nerves and muscles. It is also for synthesis of proteins and metabolism of
carbohydrates.
4.
CALCIUM – for strong bones and teeth. It is also for
muscles to contract and for nerves to carry messages to brain and other parts
of the body.
5.
PHOSPHORUS – for bone health which is found on bones itself. It
helps also on the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is said to
be the primary carrier of energy to cells.
6.
MAGNESIUM - muscles need it for magnestism to contract and
nerves need it to send and receive messages.
7.
SULFUR - major part of amino acids, methionine, and
cysteine. Methionine helps create new proteins and cysteine helps produce glutathione
which is a powerful antioxidant.
B. Micro-Minerals – minerals we need in small amounts.
1. ZINC - for cell growth and
division and tissue repair and reproductive development.
2. IODINE - a key component of thyroid hormones, thyroxine, and
triiodothyronine that are important for physical and mental development.
3. SELENIUM - a key component of antioxidant enzymes that helps
in protecting healthy cells.
4. COPPER – for the production pf red and white blood cells and
utilization of iron efficiently.
5. MANGANESE – for a healthy bone formation and an energy
metabolism.
6. CHROMIUM – for healthy blood sugar levels which helps insulin
the hormones wherein it enables cells to absorbs glucose from the blood.
7. MOLYBDENUM – activates enzymes that helps the body process
protein and the genetic material like the DNA.
