A famous old statue that stands for 24 years on the
Tiananmen Square on Beijing Hong Kong has recently been removed – the famous “Pillar
of Shame” statue. The famous old statue memorialized and immortalized the
massacre that has happened on the Tiananmen Square during the 1989
pro-democracy protests wherein protestors were killed by Beijing troops. The
statue stands at the campus of the University of Hong Kong atop on a podium. The
statue is a reminder of the shameful event that happened then and will never
reoccur.
The statue is a sculpture of contorted human torsos
and faces of the victims in anguish expressions which stands 8 meter or 26 feet
high located at the Haking Wong Building of the University.
On October 2021, the University have request for
removal of the statue in the ground or reason that if the statue continue to be
display it will pose legal risk for the University based on Crime Ordinance on
the Hong Kong government. The removal is also for safety reasons that the statue
is fragile and there is no party that obtain the approval of the University
that the statue be display on the campus. The removal is for the best interest
of the University based on legal advice and risk assessment.
On December 22,2021 the removal of the statue begun
on the coming midnight and daylight Thursday, December 23,2021, the statue is
already gone or gone on sight or disappear.
